practice scales constantly. The main rock/blues ones are the Major and Minor Pentatonic, though if you’re looking for metal licks….can’t help you.

Figure out where your root note starts off in different places up the neck, and start doing those pentatonics starting from there. Also, get some medium gauge strings on your guitar (12s +) and do a lot of bending. If you have a backup guitar, all the better for the big strings. You’ll move back to 8s or 9s and think you’re SRV reborn.

try this on for size…I’ve never learned alternate picking…I’ve played guitar, sung on stage for bands while playing rhythym and never once soloed….I’m 36 years old and have been playing since 13….is that sad or what…not really… didn’t need it…don’t need a whole basketball court to shoot hoops…but just recently I’ve craved it…one day you’ll just commit and it’ll start to happen naturally….don’t sweat it dude…play what you want at all times and the rest is under the boot.

i have been playing for ten years…. its all about how much you know about your guitar. the way it souds, the techniques you can make… but most importantly…. where the notes are located. If you don’t, then how do you expect to get a certain note? By playing along the fretboard until you get to the right note???

What is Tapping?

Tapping produces a drowning sound as it sounds like you play really fast but actually it is not. It is just a matter of timing and coordination between your left and right fingers.
Tapping has existed in some form or another for centuries, basically ever since the guitar has existed. Eddie Van Halen was the person responsible for popularizing the tapping technique for the modern audience, influencing many guitarists and musicians and nowadays it is one of the heavily used techniques in rock and metal.

Tapping the guitar means you produce sounds by tapping the string at any fret, instead of plucking the strings. Tapping can be carried out with just one hand, or both hands at the same time, and can be used to give your music a more percussive feel, therefore rhythm and timing is very important.

To get the most out of tapping, you will use an overdriven amp or distortion pedal. If you’re using a lot of distortion, you will hear unwanted strings/notes ring out because of touching other strings by accident, and the force of the tapping causing the fret board to vibrate. This means that you will have to put great emphasis on muting the strings you are not tapping. You can do this by using palm muting the bass strings, and finger muting the treble strings you are not tapping.

Tapping with One Hand

Taping with one hand means you use your right hand finger to tap the string on the fretboard at any given fret in any string you desire and then your left hand for fretting the string. For example, tap at the 12th fret of the high E string and pull off outward while your fretting hand on the 5th fret.

The following is the correct way to do one handed tapping:

use the index or middle finger of your plucking hand to sound the first note on a string by sharply hammering onto it once
pull off to a lower note held by one of the left hand fingers
You can then pull off or hammer on to another note with your fretting fingers, creating different sequences.
Keep your taps as coordinated as possible. Try not to touch other strings.
As with all of the new guitar techniques you learn, start out slow and speed up gradually.

Tapping with Two Hands

Two handed tapping means, taping first your right hand finger and pull-off then your fretting hand will also tap on a certain fret after it sounds the open string note. For example, tap on the 12th fret then pull-off and let the open string note sounds and then tap on the 5th fret.

The following are suggested tapping exercises

·         Tap – pull-off – pull-off

·         Tap – pull-off – hammer-on

·         Tap -  pull-off – hammer-on – hammer-on

·         Tap -  pull-off –tap – – hammer-on

·         Tap -  slide – pull-off –tap – – hammer-on

·         Tap -  pull-off – hammer-on – hammer-on – pull-off – pull-off

After you perfected all the exercises on the 1st string try it also on the remaining string. If you have any ideas to be added on your mind then do it. Mastering the technique of tapping will greatly increase your vocabulary on your guitar playing. Good luck and have fun with it.

Every guitar player at some point wants to copy and learn to play their favorite guitar solos. There are many routes to learn a guitar solo but if you truly want to be a guitar player and learn how to play guitar properly I feel the best way to go about this is to try and learn the guitar solo by ear. If you fail miserably you might want to look at some tabs of the solo or even by the actual sheet music but learning to play guitar solos by ear is the best way to bring your playing to a new level.

How To Play Guitar Solos Step 1 –

Find the key that the song is in. This is the most important part. Once you know what key the song is in we then know that the guitar solo will use a limited amount of notes, usually no more than 7 across various octaves. Generally speaking the entire guitar solo will be either in a seven note minor scale or a seven note major scale.

How To Play Guitar Solos Step 2 –

Mentally break the entire guitar solo into small manageable pieces. The worst way to learn a guitar solo is to try and start from the beginning of the guitar solo and just learn it from one end to the other. It is much easy to break the entire solo into smaller phrases, as many as you need to, and then learn each part of the solo individually, before putting them all together.

How To Play Guitar Solos Step 3 –

Start with the easy sounding sections first. I’m sure this really needs no explanation, but if you can learn a small easy part of the solo first you can more easily determine the scale the solo is in thus making the entire solo easier to figure out. Try to learn a small part of the guitar solo where the guitarist is not doing a lot of fancy bends or hammer-ons.

How To Play Guitar Solos Step 4 –

Start with pentatonic scales.  Most guitar solos are based around a five note scale; either a major pentatonic or a minor pentatonic.  A major pentatonic, (generally used in country music) starts on the root note and includes the 2nd,3rd, 5th,and 6th notes in the scale. In the key of C that would be C D E G A. The minor pentatonic scale starts on the root and includes a flatted 3rd, 4th,5th and flatted 7th notes. In the key of C that would be C Eb F G Bb. This scale is used more in rock guitar solos.  By initially limiting yourself to finding which  one of these pentatonic scales is in use you can get the overall scale much easier. Once you’ve determined the 5 main notes being used you’ve usually only got 2 more to figure out.

How To Play Guitar Solos Step 5 –

This probably the most important step of all. Listen, listen, listen. When you think that you’ve learned part of the solo. Stop playing and just listen to the recording again. Then play back what you think is right. Then listen to the recording again. Nothing frustrates people more than listening to a guitar player play a well known solo almost right. I’ve watched many guitar players try to learn a solo by playing along with it and they’re not really hearing what is on the recording. This one mistake will almost ensure that you will not learn the guitar solo correctly. Stop playing and just listen. Then try it again.
