What instrument is harder to learn to play, the flute or the guitar?

I have learned how to play the flute and I own a guitar but have nowhere to take lessons. I only get to take them for eight days in the summer. I do practice what I know a lot. What would you say is harder to learn? Also, can someone teach themselves to play guitar?

I’ve told this to a LOT of people- there’s NO SO SUCH THING as an "easy instrument"- they’re ALL hard! Some people also learn different instruments easier than others- like I can’t play guitar at ALL, but I play some flute as well as several other woodwinds.
So yes, maybe you will be better at flute than guitar, maybe not.

What are the keys on guitar and how to play them?

Hey, I have been playing guitar for a while, but I am trying to write songs, and they sound like crap if it is not in the right key. Can someone help me by telling me what keys there are and really, how to play them?

In the major keys you have: A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, and G# or A, Bb, B, C, Db, D, Eb, E, F, Gb, G, Ab, and A.

The same holds true for all the minor keys from Am to G#m or Abm.

Whether a key is flatted or sharped you can form the pertinent chord for the intended key in the usual formation. You simply must learn the major and minor chords for each key signature. But writing your song in the key of Ab would have a different signature from writing it in G#–which are the same chord, but different incidentals.

In short, you need lessons on basic music theory to better understand how to write your music.

Is it a good idea to take my daughter out of piano lessons if her heart is with the electric guitar?

She has been ‘secretly’ playing the Electric Guitar at her friends house and has taken a liking to it. She was afraid to tell me since we have put money into her piano lessons. Is it a good idea to take her out of piano or should we just let her continue? She wouldn’t mind piano AND Guitar Lessons but we think she should be focused on one thing right now.
My daughter is 13

How old is she? Does she like one instrument more than the other? Don’t let her continue to think she has to hide her guitar playing.

It really is up to HER, Ask her which instrument she would like to take lessons for, or which one she sees herself continuing in the long run.

I would stick with piano though. just because I played piano competitively from ages 5-15, tried out violin, and classical guitar in my older years. But til this day, I wish I never quit piano. I still occasionally pick up my guitar, but I find playing piano more satisfying. THe piano is a beautiful instrument, and learning how to play while young makes other instruments easier to master in the future.

You should get a guitar for her to play around with. Guitar is easily self taught.

Dreadnought

The guys that made the classic came out with yet another wonderful piece of art. Bigger in size, feel and sound was different, the dreadnought is undoubtedly stylish. The notable D-series ranging from the D-18 to the D-45 are what to look for. They are far from disappointing and would be a very good investment.

Jumbo

Come on, you didn’t think the above two were going to be the only ones did you? What would this place be without competition? Gibson had to retaliate (figure of speech, not in literal sense); martin could not be the only ball player.

Which One Should I Buy?

You know what; it is all about personal preference. The classic is for the people that want a clear and cleaner sound. The Dreadnought and Jumbo in a way are more for the ones going for the bass sound. Classic, Dreadnought and Jumbo are all acoustic guitars and it does not matter which one you buy.

The only thing that matters though is that you should buy a guitar right away and start playing. Don’t you think you have wasted enough time as it is? There you have it, an acoustic guitar body explained; now you can make an informed decision.

How to prep for guitar lessons?

I’m a long-term fan of the guitar and piano and have finally been able to sign up for Guitar Lessons at school. My friend has offered to help me with the guitar. I don’t want to waste his time with the basics but I also dont’ want to learn the fundamentals wrong. I’ve never held a guitar and I’m not sure if the new teacher teachs notes or tabs. I understand how to read notes and I get the idea behind tabs but besides that, I’m completely in the dark.Any tips or suggestions are more than welcome! Thanks!

Your thinking too much.

First off, you have knowledge of standard music notation and music theory!!!, you are way ahead of 95% of people who "play" guitar. No worries!

Second, Tab is just a visual representation of the guitar strings (low E/ the fattest strung on the bottom). Read it from left to right, the numbers just tell you where to press, which string when, in what order. No duration is given, it’s just a road map that people practice to learn to play their favorite songs. No music theory involved. Again, NO WORRIES, you are still way ahead.

Don’t over think it. You know much more than other people who are starting out. Just enjoy it. The hardest thing will be getting your fingers used to pressing the strings. Don’t worry about it, you’ll discover the simple things faster than the others, and grasp the more complex things in a way that will make the others dizzy.

The rock world is so full of cheats anyway. Power chords and drop tunings make the guitar so stupid easy that any 5 year old could be a super star. So many people use them and don’t understand the theory of how it works. What’s it matter, it still looks and sounds wicked awesome!!!>sarcasm<

Besides, playing on the nylon strings of an acoustic is much easier on the fingers than going straight to the steel strings of an electric. But whether you go the acoustic route or straight to electric is entirely your choice.

The Basics

Every guitar player from Sting to Santana started out the same – with the scales. This is where a book or a tutor will come in handy, because you\’ve got to have these memorized before you can go and play the advanced stuff. As soon as you\’ve learned how to pluck and strum, the scales will be your very first lesson.

As you might have noticed, playing the electric guitar – for beginners, that is – can get pretty boring. It\’s all just a matter of time, though. You don\’t even need to do any actual memorization, especially if you practice on the guitar a lot. You\’ll eventually get the scales down and then work your way through to the more basic songs.
