It depends on the teacher. Some music teachers are just amazing at making things graspable and will help you to understand all the complicated “formulas” in music.

Is it an electric or acoustic class? Or both?

You’ll most likely learn a lot if it goes up to the advanced level, but most of the fun and learning comes naturally after you learn a few of the basic fundamentals.

So my advice is to go ahead and take the class, you’ll definitely learn something helpful.

Music is good for the soul.

Question by f’in beetch: Can the ability to play guitar help you get into college?
you know how playing the flute, drums, or some other instruments in band will be good if you can play, to help get into college. would a guitar count or not? do any colleges count guitars as band instruments?

I am confident in writing that any curricular activity that makes you unique in the application process to universities and colleges will show you as a well rounded student.
There are universities and colleges that do offer courses and programs in music with a guitar concentration. A quick search of the web unveiled at least two results.

I’ve been playing guitar since I was 9, and by the time I was 11 I could play basic rock songs with ease. What genres of music are you playing? rock is fairly easy. Jazz is difficult. Country is easy. Classical is EXTREMELY difficult. A college student could probably learn a few covers in 6-8 months. Feel free to ask me anything.

Bear this in mind; college students want your money. I’m sure some would be great teachers. Same goes for the pro’s. Some may not need your money as badly, but that’s how it works. If you’re advanced enough to learn by ear, you’ll be better off. You can work on reading in your spare time. I read, but never use it in my situation. But I’ve been at it for over 40 years.

Assuming that the lessons offered by the community college are group lessons, it’s my opinion that private lessons would be a better deal. The problem is that many guitar students do not get the individual attention they need from a group instructor. It is very important for beginning guitarists to know correct hand placement, chord-forming, etc. and an instructor must point these out to you. That’s much easier in a one-on-one situation.

It is also why the group lessons need two hours to complete with what a private instructor can accomplish in 30 minutes.

However, I also advise against 30 minutes and urge you to take one-hour lessons. It is VERY hard to get much done in 30 minutes.

I really want a smallish acoustic with a thin body, but I still want it to sound good. I also don’t want it to be too expensive since I’m not anticipating getting a ton of money from my electric. Any suggestions?

I always preferred Yamaha instruments, whether it be guitar, piano, or clarinet.

Although Yamaha guitars might be a little on the bigger side, the sound quality is definitely something to be admired. I guess you could say that they also can stand more abuse than some other brands of guitars.
