It is just a dexterity issue. When you first started learning open chords you probably had the same issue. Now that you are trying to make barre chords your hand is in a more restricted position because of having to keep that first finger down. It will come with practice, but think about keeping the hand more open (the palm further away from the fretboard) so you can get those fingers coming in straight, perpendicular to the strings, which will keep you from muting the strings. It will take time. I remember the first time I was shown barre chords, I swore that I could never do it, now I just laugh when I think about that. It will come with time, I promise.

you can easily figure out the strum pattern by listening to the song.

If you know the general melody of favored songs then go by the chords and lyrics. Tablature can only do so much whereas music notation will open the world of music to you.

Tablature is useful to help you learn introductions and riffs of a song.

Play those songs in which you are familiar and your chord expertise will grow along with rhythm techniques.

Question by BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA: I am very new to guitar, and people are always telling me to learn chords. But there are so many?
Apparently there are chords like main chords that make up most songs or something.

I don’t really know what I am talking about, I just suppose I should learn some guitar chords.

But every chart I see is different, how do they work? Where do you suggest I get started?

I suggest going onto youtube and searching up some users who teach how to play the guitar on their site! it’s a lot easier if you’re taught visually, and its free!

Chord positions and getting the strings held all the way down is something that takes time and callouses. Make sure you chord your guitar for a few minutes every day til you get used to it. It will come but you have to be patient. At first concentrate on just a few chords in one key so that you will be able to play as soon as possible. C is good place to start. Work on the progression of C, G, Am, F. Then you can do this:

Simply add an F note and an A note when you want to play a G9. To do that, play your G chord that you know and press the A note on the 3rd string, 2nd fret. It looks like this: 3232O3. Position your fingers on the appropriate frets and strings and you will have it.

Another way to get G9 is as follows, using your little finger to catch the A note on the 5th fret, 1st string:

Question by Gillen: How do you play power chords on guitar?
I have a how to book that has been guiding me though How To Play Guitar but im confused on how to play power chords. I get how they work, I just don’t know how to only strum the two strings. My book says to mute the higher stringsby softly resting my palm on them. I dont know what they mean by that and i have troble just strumming the two strings without hitting any other ones….ANY HELP?????

I’m a beginning guitar player and I suck at music theory. I can’t read music, knowing only the very bare basics of it. However, I find Tablature and chord diagrams much easier to grasp. Will I get AT LEAST decently far with just tabs and chords?

Definitely. The style of sheet music you learn from in terms of sheet or tablature is irrelevant so long as you keep practicing and learning. If it’s easier for you then go for it.

As a beginner, start by learning your basic chords and work your way up. From there you can move into some basic chord progressions and finally into learning some songs. Keep at it and you’ll be playing the music you want in no time!
