What are the keys on guitar and how to play them?

Hey, I have been playing guitar for a while, but I am trying to write songs, and they sound like crap if it is not in the right key. Can someone help me by telling me what keys there are and really, how to play them?

In the major keys you have: A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, and G# or A, Bb, B, C, Db, D, Eb, E, F, Gb, G, Ab, and A.

The same holds true for all the minor keys from Am to G#m or Abm.

Whether a key is flatted or sharped you can form the pertinent chord for the intended key in the usual formation. You simply must learn the major and minor chords for each key signature. But writing your song in the key of Ab would have a different signature from writing it in G#–which are the same chord, but different incidentals.

In short, you need lessons on basic music theory to better understand how to write your music.

It would be nice if you guys and girls could give me some websites with Guitar Lessons and all kinds of other cool guitar stuff. I’ll give 25 extra points to the best answer.

www.freeandeasyguitar.com is a good site that has video tutorials and is very beginner friendly.

ps, like anything the more you invest and observe the more it will reward. My advice strum around your basic g,d,c,f,a,e,em,am,dm, chords while beginning. Those chords i listed above are just about in any song you come across. A real popular chord progression is G,D,Em,C ask any guitar player they’ve played that sequence a share to many. How do I learn how to play an electric guitar?

I want to learn how to play an Electric Guitar as my side hobby, but don’t know where to start. I know that there are different kinds of guitars and that each kind has its own special characteristic, therefor I chose electric.

Where do I need to go to learn which notes are located where on the guitar? And what is a good starting guitar for a beginner without breaking the bank?

Well if you want electric, get a Squier Special Strat from Musician’s Friend. It’s a nice guitar for the money (about 200), plus it comes with an amp , cable, strap, stand, tuner, picks, and gig bag. I own one and I’ve never had a problem. Plus it’s available in a nice three-tone sunburst.

I learned to play with a cheap chord book that can be found at any music store. I just learned my major chords. (A,B,C,D,E,F,G) That took about a week. Then I taught myself some easy songs using tablature i got off of www.ultimate-guitar.com (smoke on the water, ironman, cat scratch fever). What’s the best way to learn How To Play Guitar by teaching yourself?

Many great guitarists were self-taught. I was basically self-taught although I had an instructor. I figured it out on my own and all my friends who play think I’m weird because of the way I do fingerings and play leads etc. If you want to teach yourself, first you must learn how to tune. If you want to learn yourself, try not to rely on googling things to help. In a way, I find it more helpful to figure out what feels comfortable for a new student him/herself. They gain speed, accuracy, and more technique faster then forcing someone to get used to something that is uncomfortable to them. I’ve been playing for 5 years, and I’ve surpassed my dad (playing 36 years) because I move much faster and accurately since everything I do is comfortable and easy for me to play. Anyways, to tune you should know notes. The standard notes for a guitar is E A D G B e starting from the 6th string (the thickest) to the first (the thinnest). In music the notes go from A to G. So if you count, E, F, F sharp, G, G sharp, A, there are 5 notes. Play the E string on the fifth fret to play an A. The second string should sound the same as that. The notes that do not have sharps are B and E. So these are the notes (in order) used in music.

A, A sharp, B, C, C sharp, D, D sharp, E, F, F sharp, G, G sharp, and then back to A.

You should figure it out this way for your first time so you have an understanding of notes and you can be more then a guitar player but actually a musician. Next you need to learn to read sheet music, then when you can, tab, and finally cord charts. Personally I find that chord charts are needed less then real notation or tableture. When you can read that, start trying to play it. Get used to moving around the neck, and when you can play decently from reading music, then you should get an instructor to teach you the theory. Learning theory will help you complete your learning of guitar. It’s how you learn to solo and about things like arpeggios that can be used in solos or just songs. Learning theory is important but it’s also the least fun part of guitar. So you should get used to playing a bit and get into it before you do the serious stuff.

Master How to Play Chords on Your Guitar

As much as many of us want to learn how to play a guitar there are some of us who are unable to pay someone to teach us. Times are tough right now and we have to worry about more important things like bills and food. So why not teach yourself? C’mon you can do it! Teaching yourself to play guitar requires more patience then if you were going through a teacher and it requires much discipline. But if you are truly motivated to learn then you can overcome any obstacle and do it.

When learning how to play the guitar one of the first things you will want to learn is how to play the guitar chords. Guitar chords are three or more notes that are played at the same time. There are a variety of chords that are placed into two different categories; minor and major chords.

When it comes to the guitar there are 5 basic major chord patterns. The primary chord patterns are C, A, G, E, and D. To help you remember them just put them together and remember the word they spell CAGED. The other chords that you will learn will come from these chord patterns so remember them well.

CAGED is a system of fretboard patterns for scales, chords, and arpeggios. The C, A, G, E, and D basic chord patterns are only your first step to the CAGED system – but it is the most important step. Master it and you will be able to easier learn scale, chord, and arpeggio which all come from these five patterns.

Find yourself a chord diagram that you can use and stick with it. Try to practice it until you are able to read it without any problems and then try to add on to it or choose another diagram that you can learn from. I know that you don’t yet know how to read a chord diagram – but just be patient and we can show you how to do just that.

The grid of the diagram is a representation of the neck of your guitar. The vertical lines represent the strings and the horizontal lines represent the frets. The vertical line all the way on the left or the largest one is the 6th string and the one all the way on the right or the smallest one is the 1st string.

The black dots with numbers on them are a representation of your fingers and which fret you are to put it on. If the black dot had a one in it then you would use your first finger, number two would be your second finger, and so on from there. Keep in mind that your pinky is represented as your fourth finger. Now you are going to place your fingers in the correct position that the diagram is telling you to.

The circles and the X’s on top of the diagram grid are easy to remember. When there is an X above a string it means that you are not to play that string. A circle above the string means that it is opened and that you don’t need your fingers.

Remember that it is going to take you some time to get the hang of it. Don’t expect to get it down in one sitting. Be patient with yourself and with how you learn and before you know it you will have it down to a science!
