Im planning to buy my first guitar soon and i am leaning towards the acoustic guitar, i was looking online and i found there was such thing as an electric acoustic guitar, now i am caught in between both, which one should i get and what is the difference.

An electric Acoustic Guitar is just a acoustic guitar with a built in pick up so you can plug it into a amp or pa. An regular acoustic cannot plug in to a amp and be amplified except using a microphone to mic to the guitar.

Learn To Play Guitar – Buying An Electric Guitar Amp

Having a great guitar amp might just be more important than having a great guitar. Sure, both are important but you can sometimes plug a poor quality guitar into a great amp and have it sound good but a great guitar plugged into a terrible amp still won’t sound that good.

There are basically four types of guitar amplifier and each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Tube amps – The tube amp has been around the longest and is the amplifier that all others are modeled after. A tube amp uses glass vacuum tubes in its power section and preamplifier section. Because of the tubes, these amps have a warm tone that feels natural and offers a lot of sustain and power. The drawback to tube amps is that the tubes wear out over time and as they wear out, the sound of the amp changes. Tube amps also store a lot of voltage and therefore require a specially trained technician to change the tubes every few years.

Solid state – The solid state guitar amp has the benefit of sounding the same every time it’s switched on as it doesn’t rely on parts that wear out to create its tone. A solid state amp uses transistors in its preamp section rather than tubes. While this does make the amplifier slightly more reliable, the tone is generally grittier and more sterile especially on overdriven or lead tones. Solid date amps almost always cost less than tube amps.

Hybrid – The hybrid amp is a new breed of amplifier that blends a tube preamp section with a solid state power amp section to try to achieve the much desired tube tone. Marshall started this trend with their Valvestate line of amps and Line 6 has partnered with world renowned tube amp manufacturer Bogner to create a modern hybrid amp. A hybrid amp naturally costs a bit more than a solid state amp but are still less expensive than a high quality tube amp.

Modeling amp – These are amplifiers that have a digital processor built in that attempts to replicate the sounds of many different guitar amplifiers, cabinets, rooms and microphone placement. They are very flexible and usually have effects built in as well as a tuner, and a direct line out for recording. Most can be switched via a foot controller so that different sounds can be brought up on the fly. They are versatile amplifiers that can generate many different sounds and are getting closer to sounding like tubes amps all the time, but many are just not there yet.

Electric Guitar Recording Techniques

A guitar is a type of musical instrument with ancient roots that is used in a wide variety of musical styles. It usually has six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten and twelve string guitars also exist. An electric guitar is the kind of guitar that uses pickups to convert the vibration of its steel cored string into electrical current, which is then amplified.

There are various ways to record an Electric Guitar. The traditional method is to connect to a really good amplifier. The latest option is to plug the guitar directly into the computer and use a software plug-in to handle the amp and the speaker modeling.

When recording an electric guitar, the amp is the important factor as far as the mic is concerned, and thus its position is important. The dynamic mic produces a solid sound with a smooth high end. However its position has just as much bearing on the tone as the mic itself.

One way to capture the sound of a large stack is to set up the stack in a large room, play it loud and put the microphone several feet away so that the combination of all the speakers can be recorded. Using this method, the mic captures the guitar sound as much as the audience would.

One of the microphones can be inverted though that does not produce the best result. Here using a capacitor microphone as the distant one often produces a sense of space, but the ultimate bottom line is that anything that sounds good goes with the guitar.

The biggest problem that many amateur guitarists face is poor tone. In order to solve this problem the recorder should check the amp and guitar combination on microphone level and then should decide where they would be placed. Tone should be adjusted but one thing should be kept in mind. The low end will increase if the microphone is placed close to the source. This is known as proximity effect.

The mic that is used for electric guitar recording is preferably a dynamic microphone because of its capability to endure high volumes. These are the technical things that one should keep in mind. But there are some simple points that will help while recording.

As a first and very basic rule, one should make sure that the guitar is in very good condition, that is, its strings are properly fitted. Tuning must be checked before every take as it is inclined to flow in warm studio.

Equipments containing transformers will tend to cause hum interference on electric guitar especially those of single coil pickups. Computer monitors in particular also cause serious interference problems with guitar pickups, so it is advisable to keep them as far away as possible.

While using different electric guitar types or sounds for recording, two or more overdrive guitar parts should be kept to keep the sounds separate in the mix. For example, using a single coil setting for one part and a humbucker for another.

How To Play A Electric Guitar In 4 Easy Steps

The electric guitar is a key part in any rock or metal band. If you want to know how to play a Electric Guitar like John Petrucci or Jimi Hendrix there are some things that you will need before you can begin playing. Unlike an Acoustic Guitar, you will need some supplies and do some setup procedures first. With an acoustic you can just begin strumming and everything will sound fine. But with a electric guitar you need an amp and other equipment or it won’t sound right. There’s 4 easy steps listed below.

Step 1. Get the guitar and equipment
The first thing you’ll need to do is buy a electric guitar if you don’t already have one. I would recommend going to a local guitar shop for your first purchase. This way you can test different guitars and get advice from the people working there. You should test out at least 10 guitars to find something that matches the tone you’re looking for. You will also need an amp to power the guitar and you can test these out in the store as well. There are two kinds of amps, a combo amp and a standalone amp. Make sure you get a combo. The last thing you’ll need to purchase seperately is a 1/4 inch patch cord to connect the guitar to the amp.

Step 2. Set everything up
After you’ve purchased the equipment you’ll need to get everything plugged in and connected. You’ll need to plug the amp into a wall socket, so make sure you find a place where the amp will be free from clutter or other obstacles. Then you take your patch cord and plug one end into the amp and the other end into the guitar. Make sure you get a long enough cord in case you want to play the guitar away from your amp. The amp should come with instructions on how to set up and play a electric guitar in case you need more assistance.

Step 3. Make adjustments and tune guitar
Depending on what kind of amp and what guitar you purchased there will be knob settings that will need to be adjusted to get the right sound. Your amp will come with a volume and gain knob, and maybe other features like disortion and reverb. Just make sure you have the volume and gain on zero when you plug in the guitar to avoid unexpected loud noise. On your guitar, you’ll have a volume control and a couple tone controls. You can play with these until you get the sound you want.

Step 4. Find a good learning course
Learning how to play a electric guitar on your own can be a difficult task. There are some good courses that can be found on the internet that will teach you everything in a step by step fashion. To become a good guitar player you’ll need to be coached by someone with experience who can show you how to play correctly and effectively. Even the little things like how to sit properly, or how to hold the guitar correctly can have a huge impact on your success. I would recommend Jamorama as the course to get started with. How can I play guitar backtracks through an tube amplifier?

I need to play lead guitar for an audition but must have a prerecorded second guitar as a back track. I am only allowed a single amp – mine being an old tube Marshall 100watt – and no other PA system. Any suggestion on how to create a consistant sound? If this amp will not work any thoughts on a contemporary one that will? Thanks. Robert H.

It’s not an optimal thing, but it could possibly be done.

It kind of depends on which Marshall you have. If it’s one of the old Super Leads with 4 inputs and two volume controls, then you could theoretically plug your music source into one of them and your guitar into the other. However, your EQ will be compromised between the guitar and the music source.

If you only have one input, you could use a small external mixer to combine your guitar and music source, and then send it to the amp. However, that would require you to run the amp very clean. So, if you’re counting on the amp for distortion, this option is out.

There are several practice amps out there now that have an input for a music source that bypasses the guitar preamp and EQ. So, you can have your guitar distorted and your music clean. Fender has a couple of amps like this now, as does Line 6. If you’re looking for a 1-box solution, this is probably your best bet.

What kind of electric guitar should I get?

I’m a beginner but am taking guitar class in high school and I want to get a cheeper Electric Guitar. What companies/types do you think I should get? Should I go for a beginner kit or get a cheaper guitar and better amp so I can have the amp for longer and get a newer guitar in a year or so? IDK what to really do there is so many guitars out there.

It depends on what style your playing
for example if your the kind of guy who wants to play heavy metal or rock I would recommend Ibanez or Gibson……
now if your planning blues you need a Les Paul…..
actually the 2 things that matter is The brand and type
Humbucker Guitars give you a fatter sound and rough tone but good for HEAVY metal ,blues,ROCK

but single coils like a stratocaster or Telecaster gives you a clear tone and is great for Jazz Rock,Alternative punk……….

for the Amp i recommend the MARSHALL amps they give you a clear bassy tone…..

and for the strings i’d say the GHS Boomers are great (gives you more louder sound from my experience with GHS strings……
strings like Ernie ball slinky and dean markley are good to but i would say GHS Boomers are strong,Reliable and would last longer that other’s………..

for a beginner like you i’d say the FENDER TELECASTER or STRATOCASTER is better since it’s cheap, gives you a great sound and chicks love it……
