Get Started Playing The Guitar

The most frequently asked question we get is:  Do I have to start playing with an acoustic guitar? Which is funny because  there is no really cut and dried yes or no answer for this question.  When it comes to Learning  2 play the guitar it really doesn’t matter what you learn on as long as you learn.   There are a thousand more important questions about learning to play the guitar than what kind of guitar should I start out with.  If you ask Me that question I’m going to ask you what kind of guitar you have.  If you have an Electric Guitar already then start learning.   If you have a guitar in your possession  and or access to a guitar then you have already started learning to  play guitar and there is one heck of a lot more to it than merely having a guitar no mater if it is acoustic or electric or electric / acoustic.

I recommend that you get started learning with what ever you have.   The second question is should I take Guitar Lessons.  You’ll get all kinds of answers on this.  Usually its because you are asking the wrong people or you are looking for the lazy way out and it is OK if you are.  You want to learn to play as fast as you can so you can get on stage, impress your friends, become a rock  or country or heavy metal star by next week or the 4th of July.   The truth is that you can learn a lot on your own,  but you can’t learn a lot with out some help from somewhere.  Lets face it you wouldn’t be interested if you had never seen a guitar or had access to a guitar.

That interest you have came from somewhere.   So lets say you’ve been playing around with your uncle’s guitar and you want to learn to play.  If your uncle plays ask him for some advice, like what can he show you and if he will show you something about the guitar.   He will probably tell you to take some lessons and then help you find a place or someone to learn from.  He might even teach you some things.   Most people don’t have much time to teach guitar to anyone  because it is difficult to make time if you already have a job or a life.  Most guitar players who didn’t start out by getting some instruction will advise you to take some beginning lessons to properly learn the basics because that is what they did or, more often than not, it is what they wish they had done first when they started playing.

If you don’t already have a guitar they will most likely tell you to start with an acoustic guitar because that makes it easier and cheaper to get started.  If you are planning on taking some lessons you will most likely be required to play an acoustic.  Starting out with an Acoustic Guitar is the best lesson you can get for free.   First of all, getting started playing an acoustic guitar will start building your strength in your fingers and hands right away.  Most, not all acoustic guitars are more difficult to fret than electrics.  Building hand and finger strength and flexibility is one of the very first things that you must do when getting started learning to play the guitar.
