Home School Guitar Learning System

I taught myself.

My one tip for now. Get a teacher to help you with the beginning stuff, if only for a month or two. It will put you ahead of the game, and get you to play the correct way. So many guitarists develop bad habits… like me.

Also, learn theory. Get a guitar book, DVD, and start watching tutorials on youtube and stuff like that. Buy guitar magazines. Learn to read tabs. Learn your major/minor scale, and basic chords and the theory behind chords. Learn about the circle of 5ths. Learn the CAGED system.

Um, that might sound like a lot. If it does… you’ll understand how necessary it is to get a teacher or even a friend who knows how to play.

get a beginning guitar book, watch videos online, learn some chords first, learn some scales, learn some riffs from the internet. Practice Your favorite songs. push yourself. Play every day. Make your fingers hurt, It may hurt to play for a while, maybe a year, I think it is usually less. Play each note with a tuner, it will help get your intonation right. Don’t get discouraged, the worst thing to do is to give up. Guitar is one of the most fulfilling things you can do.

Start off by learning simple songs that you like, make sure you get a decent book that explains scales, chords and some theory and ideally has a cd you can play along with. Get a metronome and use it when you practice. Practice scales and arpeggios in all positions. Start, or join, a band sooner rather than later, playing with other people makes you get better more quickly.
