Learn 2 Play Guitar
How do you play guitar chords with fingers, rather than with a pick?
I’ve been using a pick to play guitar chords, but I like the quieter sound of the fingers and thumb. How can I correctly use my fingers to play the chords?
I don’t think there’s any one "correct" way to do it, just do whatever sounds best to you.
I use the left side/top of my right thumb, much in the same way a pick would be used. I also like the quieter sound. Bob Dylan grows his thumbnail long and uses it as a pick, but I can’t seem to make that work for me.
Just experiment and practice, and you will find what works for you. Good luck!

You could try putting your thumb and forefinger together and strumming with your nails?

Funny story,
I worked at a drug store and some guy came in and asked if he put fake nails on, if they would fall off when playing guitar. I said yeah! He said he needs long nails to play instead of using a pick. I said they would definitely fall of, THEN he asked if taping them on with duct tape would help………….

The angle the hand is held depends on whether you use a thumbpick or the thumbnail. The nails on the picking hand should be filed to a length roughly where if the finger or thumb were touching a table at a right angle the end of the nail would just barely be touching the table.
Check your local/school library for any classical guitar method books: This will have better illustrations of the free stroke and the rest stroke than can be given here.
This will take a long time to learn well, finger style gutar playing is the reason the less dextrous hand is used for fretting as finger style requires more skill than using a pick.
In the meantime just try some set patterns playing arpegios, starting with the thumb on the lowest note then using the index, middle, and ring finger in order picking the third, second and first string. Then mix up the order of the fingers, experiment…..

Many different styles, and you’d be suprised how many acomplished guitarists do not use a pick, Mark Knopfler and Jeff Beck come to mind, the most common style would be the thumb forefinger and middle finger picking style, heres a good vid.

I think that’s called finger picking. Here is an advanced video showing how to play the guitar tab for the Super Mario Bros music:

You might be able to play that if you get good at finger picking.

Hi,
Are you teaching yourself to play guitar? Despite all the books and on-line videos around, you’ll make much better progress visiting a guitar teacher and – especially for fingerpicking – you’ll develop good technique right from the start.
Hope this helps.

Ah, finger picking(:
I actually learned to do it while I was trying to learn bass, it helped me adjust to using individual fingers for guitar. Well, for guitar I started by using two fingers(index and middle) to pick each string. Once I got used to the feel of that I added my ring finger. Then my thumb and pinky after that. I usually use my thumb for the low E and A string, index for D, middle for G, Ring for B and pink for E. It’s sort of tricky at first, I haven’t completely mastered it myself either and I have been messing around with it for a few months, but if you put a lot of work into it and ease into it, it will come much easier.
