Not long. It’s pretty easy to get a handle on, especially if you already know music. It only took me about a month to be able to play basic things/know strumming patterns/chord shapes. It’s really not that hard to grasp, but after a while it gets a bit more complicated. Good luck :)

    I second what augustus said.
It’s what my uncle tells me often, he’s been playing most of his life and he’s still learning.
I’ve been playing 6 years and still have so much to learn..

It varies with each person and also depends on what you mean by "learn"… If you just study tabs and copy what others have figured out then it’ll probably be a couple of months, if you want to be able to read music notation and become an advanced player then 1+ years.

I’ll have to disagree with the notion that you should practice until your fingers are numb, over practicing can be worse than not practicing! I know people who have strained their hand/finger muscles to the point where the had to take a week or two off. It’s better to put in 4 15 minute practice sessions than 1 long 2 hour session in a day.

The goal early on is to develop the finger muscles slowly and what they call muscle memory, this is where the brain is able to tell the fingers where to go without even looking. And your finger tips will hurt for about 2-3 weeks.

If you really want a well thought out structured approach, buy a DVD course called "Learn and Master Guitar". Do a Google search on it and you will find that is is the highest rated course out there by all reviewers.

Few months of regular practice will groom your skills to learn guitar. After that more practice will take you to higher levels of perfection. Practice guitar with latest songs and free music downloads for better results.

Agustus is right…you never stop learning, there’s ALWAYS something else to learn weather it’s technique or chords or scales..(not everyone bother’s to know everything) like i’m not going to learn scales right now but i know down the line i probably will end up learning them at some point.
i can’t believe some people said a month!!
it also depends on how well you want to be able to play and what kind of stuff like if your talking Jimi Hendrix!>…..years and years and hours and hours of practice

    good luck!
