I can play standing up with my guitar hanging at like chest height pretty well. However, I look gay. I try to bring it only low enough to look good, but I cant finger it right unless I tilt the neck up. When I do that, I cant palm mute and it feels akward if I do, and Im scraping the strings, like this:
v pick
string
Not exactly clear but u get the picture. If I try to rotate my hand, my wrist is strained. How do I play standing up with my guitar hanging low?

Obviously, you don’t. Sure, it LOOKS cool to stand there with your guitar hanging down around your crotch, but you can’t actually play it that way without running the risk of hurting yourself by rotating your wrists and hands into awkward strained positions.

So you have to decide whether you want to LOOK cool, or play well. Personally, I would vote for playing well, but YMMV.

You don’t have to have the guitar all the way up at chest height, though. Try putting the guitar down around waist level. Adjust the strap so that the guitar is in the same position and at the same height when you stand as it is when you sit, then you’ll be comfortable either way.

for some people its really hard to play without having the guitar at beatle height. all i can say is practice with your neck lower, or try to find a middle ground. concider getting a shorter neck guitar with smaller frets, that might help. if nothing else, just sit down and play, you look fine and the guitar is pretty high.

If you play extreme metal guitar like death or black metal etc, and want to look cool, there’s two type of ‘cool’ in extreme metal guitar, one is ‘sword holding type’- guitar hanging low, and another is ‘machine gun type’- guitar hanging high like holding a machine gun, so there’s nothing gay about guitar hanging high :)

so to be precise if you hold you guitar low you will have many limitation in your playing…i agree with Mr. RachelS165… it’s better for you to choose to hang your guitar high so you can play and execute every possible technique in your playing very well and confortable

    "However, I look gay."

That, my friend, is all in your head. If you brush up on your guitar skills, and rip some gnarly riffage at chest height, it will look a lot less gay than if you suck with it slung low. Here’s the thing about trying to look cool: If you ARE cool, then even when you do something that you think looks gay, it will BE cool. If you’re just trying to LOOK cool, people will be able to see through it.

Play your guitar where it’s comfortable. From first hand experience, if you’ve got talent, it doesn’t really matter how you look. Plenty of talented, famous, well-respected musicians wear their guitars somewhere between belly and chest, because that’s how they’re comfortable.
